Getting Set Up
Getting set up is the short path from a new account to your first piece of content. In about two minutes you tell us who the person is, then build their first Story, Routine, or Token Board through the chat. Every step works on the Free plan.
What it is
Onboarding is everything between signing up and making your first piece of content. You create an account, set up the first person with their name and age, add a photo or description, agree to AI-generation consent, and land in a first-run version of the creation chat to build their first Journey.
Setup is judged by an asset, not a checkbox. An account counts as set up only once its main person has an avatar, the generated picture that represents them. On its own, starting a profile isn't enough.
The whole path runs on the Free plan, which includes 3 free creations to use on any mix of Stories, Routines, and Token Boards. You don't need to pay anything to finish setting up.
How it works
Sign in or create an account
One combined screen handles both. Enter a new email and a one-time code creates and signs you in. To sign in to an existing account, use a passkey, Google, a password, or an email code. New accounts also get a passkey offer during the flow, which you can set up or skip.
Open the Get Started card
A new account's dashboard shows a Get Started card, 'Everything starts with who they are,' with a note that setup takes about two minutes.
Step 1, Who
The person's first name and age. Continue stays off until both are filled in.
Agree to AI generation
Between Who and Photo sits a one-time card headed "One thing before we start." It explains that we use the first names, photos, and descriptions you add to generate your content, with a link to how your data is used and stored. Choose "Agree and continue" or "Not now." It is deliberately unnumbered, so it doesn't read as a fourth step.
Step 2, Photo
Upload a photo, or choose "Don't have a photo? Describe their appearance instead." A photo is used to create the avatar and an appearance description, then discarded. While the avatar is being made, the step relabels to "Creating avatar." Usually under a minute; slow days can take two.
Step 3, Approve
The avatar is revealed and you either confirm it ("That's {name}") or try again. The retry matches how you started: "Try a different photo" on the photo path, "Try a different description" on the describe path. Either one takes you back to step 2 so you can change what you gave it.
Land in first-run chat
Once the avatar is set, you land in the creation chat in first-run mode, with a greeting that says you're ready to start the person's Journey and a short how-it-works card.
Make the first creation
Through the chat, create the first Story, Routine, or Token Board. Stories and Routines show a preview card to confirm; Token Boards are confirmed right in the conversation.
Good to know
The "Step 1 of 3" header belongs to onboarding only. Adding another profile later, or editing one you already have, walks the same three screens without the numbering.
Plans and limits
- Free
- Set up your first person and use your 3 free creations on any mix of Stories, Routines, and Token Boards. The full onboarding path works here with no subscription. Once your free creations are used, the chat entry becomes an upgrade screen.
- Premium
- Needed for more than one main profile. The first person is always allowed on Free; a second main profile requires Premium.
Common questions
Troubleshooting
What it does not do
- There's no product tour, checklist, or multi-screen walkthrough beyond the wizard and the one-time first-run chat.
- Completion isn't tracked by a separate 'onboarding complete' flag. It's always read from the person's avatar.
- Email verification stops at the one-time signup code, and Google and Apple signups skip the code entirely.
- Declining consent records nothing and doesn't block browsing. It only gates generation.
- Coming back to an unfinished setup never spends another avatar generation on its own.
- Onboarding doesn't require a subscription.
