GentleVoice

Narration is the app reading a Story or a Routine out loud, and every plan includes it. Six voices come with the app, you pick one per person, and on the GentleVoice plan you can record your own voice and have that read instead. This covers picking a voice, recording yours, and where a recorded voice does and does not play.

What it is

There are two kinds of narration voice. Six default voices come with every plan, Free included: a small roster tuned for a slower, calmer delivery that works well for people with autism. The other kind is your own voice, built from a recording you make, and that one is the GentleVoice plan at $21.99 a month.

What the Free plan limits is how much you can create, not who reads it. Narration plays on Stories and Routines. Token Boards have no audio, so nothing there is narrated.

Every person picks their own reading voice, so two people on the same account can read in two different voices. Your recorded voice is one per account, and any person can be set to use it.

How it works

  1. Open the narration voice hub

Personalization carries a "Narration voice" card. It follows whoever is the active person, names them, and shows who currently reads for them, like "Marisol" or "your voice." Open it and you get that person's voice hub. The card never drops you straight into recording.

  2. Audition the six default voices

The hub lists Marisol (warm and unhurried), Theo (steady and low), Amara (bright and gentle), Daniel (even and clear), Nadia (lively and warm), and Miles (relaxed and friendly). Press play on any row to hear the same short line read in that voice, then use "Use" to pick it. The choice applies immediately, with no save step, and it works on every plan.

  3. Record your own voice (GentleVoice)

In the "Your voice" part of the hub, choose "Record your voice." Setup sits behind AI-generation consent and carries its own note that your recording is sent out to build the voice. The ready screen states the requirement plainly: "30 seconds minimum. About a minute is ideal."

  4. Read the passage

An on-screen passage of about 150 words takes roughly a minute at a natural pace. Past 30 seconds the screen coaches "Long enough. Keep going to about a minute." Recording stops on its own at two minutes. A recording under 30 seconds says "That was a little short.", names how long you actually recorded, and offers Record again.

  5. Hear it and keep it

The app builds the voice and makes a short sample, which takes about a minute. The player is labeled "Hear the sample." Keep it with "Perfect, use this voice," or Record again, which throws away the voice you just made and starts over. If the sample could not be made, you still land on a success screen (the voice was built and saved) and the button reads "Use this voice" instead.

  6. Manage it later

A voice can be turned off or deleted, and both act across the whole account: every person reading in your voice falls back to a default. Turning it off keeps the voice for later; deleting removes it for good. "Record a new voice" replaces the one you have. The manage screen states the retention rule: "We keep this voice until you delete it or leave the GentleVoice plan. A missed payment won't delete it."

Good to know

The hub exists for every person on both surfaces, addressed one person at a time. The Personalization card follows whichever profile is active, so switching the active person is how you reach someone else's hub. Picking a default voice never deletes a recorded one: the hub says so directly, "Picking a default just switches reading. Your voice stays saved, nothing is deleted."

Common questions

Troubleshooting

What it does not do

  • No voice recording on Free or Premium. That part is the GentleVoice plan only.
  • No per-content or per-play voice picker. The voice is chosen per person, not per Story, and there's no chooser at play time.
  • No narration on Token Boards. They have no audio.
  • No recorded voice on new narration for a publicly shared link. That always uses the standard default voice.
  • No pause and resume mid-recording. Record again starts over.
  • No keeping your raw recording. We hold on to the resulting voice and a short sample, nothing else.
  • No prices on the voice screens themselves. They point you at the pricing page instead.
